Trump inaugural speech shot through with racism, imperialism, exploitation

Republican President Donald Trump’s January 20 inaugural address in the US Capitol rotunda—a sacred space his Trumpites rampaged through four years before in the failed insurrection he ordered—was shot through with racist and imperialist language, even more than his speeches on the campaign trail. Add exploiting natural resources and you have a potent brew.Needless to say, Trump often got applause, plus some standing ovations from the right-wing Republican crowd and the oligarchs lined up behind him. The few Democrats, including outgoing President Joe Biden, clapped tepidly, if at all.

The Threat against Iran

These forces included the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Basij Force, and took place in the air, on land, and in the sea. The exercises began in Iran’s western Kermanshah province, with the Mirza Kuchak Khan Brigade in the lead. The name of this Brigade is interesting.

The Shudders that Rumble Through French Colonialism

MAYOTTE, just north of Madagascar, has been part of the overseas French empire since 1843, continues to exist as an ‘overseas territory’ despite the irresistible anti-colonial hunger. France, apart from most of the other European colonial powers, continues to hold large parts of the world under its dominion (from French Guiana in South America to New Caledonia in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Many of these overseas territories are small islands, which had provided bases and coaling stations to the French navy when it commanded larger territories, such as Indochina and French West Africa.

The Fall of the Assad Government in Syria

AS the rebel forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (Syria Liberation Committee) seized Damascus, Syria’s capital, on December 7, 2024, the president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad boarded a flight to Moscow, Russia. It was the end of the rule of the Assad family that began when Hafeez al-Assad (1930-2000) became president in 1971, and which continued through his son Bashar from 2000 – a fifty-three-year period of rule.

Israel’s Genocide: Perils of European Atonement

Europe has twisted itself into knots. It has ended up weaponising its own barbaric past to shelter the barbaric present.

‘NAZI’ – Europe’s lasting contribution to political language – remains the prime ascription of evil in political critique. While the vast criminality implied means its usage is usually an excess, Europe’s range of behaviour since October 7 last year has placed it, plausibly, within touching distance of its wartime notoriety.
