South Korea-Japan Inching Closer

THE latest Hollywood blockbuster "Oppenheimer" is not likely to hit theaters in Japan. The release of “Barbie,” the second superhit of the year, is also under a cloud as Japanese people are irked by social media comments which have combined the two movies as “Barbenheimer.”It is certainly difficult for Japanese audiences to digest a movie eulogising Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist who led the project of making atomic bombs. Moreover, this would be unacceptable to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose political constituency is in Hiroshima.

The Wagner Group versus Russian State Army

PRIVATE military contractors (PMCs), a euphemism for corporate military entities, are back in the news. This time, it is the Wagner Group, a Russian PMC whose leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, staged an apparent armed rebellion against the Russian State. The Russian government had contracted the Wagner Group's services for the war in Ukraine. Prigozhin, known as "Putin's chef" and manager of his online troll army, betrayed his boss and now finds himself abandoned by the Russian State in Belarus.

US-China: Jaw-Jaw or Thaw-Thaw?

THE risk of conflict in the Western Pacific is growing as both China and America, along with their allies, raise the military stakes with the goal of outsmarting each other. Both Washington and Beijing are trying hard to keep their nerve while preparing for war. President Xi Jinping warned Chinese national security officials last week that they should prepare for the "worst-case" scenario and "stormy seas.”Last month, a Chinese naval vessel came within 150 yards of a US missile destroyer traversing the Taiwan Strait with a Canadian warship.

Eurasia is America's Top Worry!

In the late 1960s, President Richard Nixon directed his national security adviser Henry Kissinger to approach China.

Let’s Not Forget the Cost of Tech-Convergence with Imperial America

EXTERNAL affairs minister S Jaishankar is not shy of wearing nationalism on his sleeves. He thinks there is nothing to be apologetic about being nationalist. His public display of nationalistic fervour has earned him many likes of social media. After Modi he is the most liked political figure in Sanghi circles and is generally appreciated as a hardworking and efficient minister. His valiant defence of Russian crude oil imports by India has certainly catapulted his public ratings. He unhesitatingly blamed Europe for following double standards.

Using War to Save American Capitalism

THE old year has passed into history, leaving behind war, inflation, recession, and relentless attacks on working class rights and democracy by right wing goons. The ecological disaster created by capitalist modes of production and consumption is converging with all other elements created by the crisis of capitalism to give the global youth a bleak future.  The political system in America, the heart of global capitalism, is crumbling.

Britain’s Working Classes Hit Back Against Mismanagement of Economy

BRITAIN’S working classes hit back against the mismanagement of the economy.  Moving into this winter, the United Kingdom has been hit by a wave of strikes, involving action by more than a million workers in the public sector led by the major trade unions. Strikes have halted train services, trash collection and port shipments around the country. The country is witnessing the biggest walkouts of the year. The unions are moving closer to coordinated action.

American Democracy in Doldrums

DESPITE inflation hovering above 8 per cent, the American voters have not really focused on the performance of the sitting president in the 2022 US mid-term elections. Breaking away from the norm of punishing the sitting president’s party, the electorate has voted tactically to defeat the possibility of the return of Donald Trump.
