Delhi: Demolition at Madrasi Camp Sparks Outcry over Uninhabitable Rehabilitation Flats

THE demolition drive at Madrasi Camp near Jangpura-B has triggered widespread outrage, as the government agencies violate court directives and fail to ensure dignified rehabilitation for displaced residents.

On May 9, 2025, the Delhi High Court had issued clear orders aimed at balancing the removal of encroachments with the smooth rehabilitation of affected residents. The Court directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to ensure that all basic amenities, including fixtures and fittings, were made available in the allotted rehabilitation flats by May 20. It also instructed authorities to facilitate school admissions for children before the academic session begins in July.

The CPI(M) Delhi state committee has found that these directions have been completely ignored. In a statement released on May 31, the Party highlighted the deplorable condition of the flats in Narela, which have been allocated to 215 out of the 350 affected households. Photos shared by the Party show broken doors and windows, damaged walls and ceilings, and a complete lack of water and electricity – conditions deemed uninhabitable in the sweltering summer heat.

Despite these shortcomings, demolition notices have been issued by the Public Works Department (PWD), with action scheduled to begin at 7:30 am on June 1. The CPI(M) warned that the BJP and the concerned agencies would be solely responsible for any unrest resulting from the demolition drive.

“The hypocritical role of the state agencies reflects the anti-poor, anti-working class stance of the BJP government,” the Party stated. “This betrayal of the promise ‘Jahan Jhuggi, Wahin Makaan’ and the ongoing demolition spree targeting jhuggis and street vendors must be resisted.”

The CPI(M) has vowed to intensify its struggle against the BJP’s “war on the lives and livelihoods” of Delhi’s working class, and has called for immediate compliance with court-mandated rehabilitation measures.
